Enjoy your time off this long weekend with these free activities!
Another long weekend is upon us!
Next Monday is Labour Day, a special celebration of the achievement of winning an eight-hour work day way back in 1840. It’s also a public holiday for Kiwis!
So, if you’re looking for something to do this long weekend, then look no further! NZ Compare has compiled our top picks for what to do this Labour Weekend. Best of all, these activities are all FREE!
Time to hit the beach!
With the forecast expecting sunny days and hot temperatures, this weekend is a perfect time to head to the beach!
One of the great things about Aotearoa is how many incredible beaches we have at our fingertips!
So pop down to your local beach and take a dip in the ocean, build a sandcastle with the kids, or sunbathe on the shore.
Just remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap!
Discover your local museum
Check out your local museum this long weekend to experience new worlds and expand your knowledge!
Museums are full of incredible free exhibitions that showcase intriguing facets of society.
If you’re based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), then check out Tāmaki Paenga Hira, Auckland War Memorial Museum. It’s free entry for Aucklanders and you’ll be able to see some amazing exhibitions including T. REX IS KING, which features a rare Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil. If you’re in the mood to soak up some breathtaking art then head to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. They have plenty of free exhibitions on right now that explore art from Aotearoa and beyond!
If you’re based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), then make sure to go to Te Papa and enjoy exhibitions like the recently added Hiahia Whenua, Landscape and Desire or the iconic Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War all for free.
If you’re based in Ōtepoti (Dunedin), then plan a visit to Otago Museum. Code Breakers: Women in Games and Mighty Small, Mighty Bright are two new free exhibitions which promise an interactive fun experience for the whole family!
These are just a few of the fantastic museums to head along to, with so many more scattered across the country. So get your family and friends together and check one out!
Get walking!
This weekend is a great chance to get out of the house and go for a walk!
Enjoy the fresh air as you stroll through your local botanic gardens or park, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, pack a bag and go for a quick hike.
Most cities across the motu have incredible walks for all different skill levels. So have a look at where you can go in your area and head out into the sun!
Auckland’s original shoreline heritage walk and Te Whanganui-a-Tara Mount Victoria Lookout Walkway are two prime examples of great walks you can explore!
Fancy a picnic?
Take advantage of the lovely weather this weekend and enjoy a scrumptious picnic!
Head to your nearest park and lay out on a picnic blanket with your favourite foods packed from home. This is a great way to save money, eat exactly what you want, and enjoy a warm day.
Picnics are perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a big family gathering or a first date!
Sports Day with the whānau!
Grab the rugby ball, tennis rackets, or cricket bat and walk down to your local recreational area to have a sports day with your family.
There’s nothing like playing your favourite sport with your loved ones. You get to have a good run around and enjoy some quality time away from your desk and with your whānau.
Plus, there’s nothing like a bit of family competition to spice up your day!
Any local events happening in your area?
Labour Weekend often means a lot of free events or festivals happening across the country.
In Tāmaki Makaurau, the Auckland Climate Festival (Te Ahurei Āhuarangi o Tāmaki Makaurau) runs for all of October. The festival aims to bring the city together to focus on climate action. There are a diverse array of events on across the weekend, all free of charge. Find out more here!
In Te Whanganui-a-Tara, the Wellington Heritage Week is on from the 24th October to 6th November. Explore the unique heritage of the capital city with heaps of free events across various buildings and historical sites. For more information, click here!
These are just two of the major events happening across the motu. So, get out and stroll around your town or city to discover a local event, market, or street festival that may be on.
Chill at home!
Since we are celebrating Labour Day, why not take some much earned time off to simply rest at home. Pop a blanket out in the backyard and enjoy the sun, chuck on a movie or TV show (check out our streaming recommendations here), or just lie in bed all day. After all, this is your long weekend and there’s no reason you can’t just blob on the couch!
