By the end of 2020, 87% of Kiwis will have access to the Ultra-Fast broadband connection. And New Zealand is moving towards that goal ahead of schedule.

New Zealand is said to be moving ahead of schedule towards making ultra-fast broadband available to 87% of Kiwis by the end of 2020, according to Clare Curran, the Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media Minister.

 

She goes on to say that more than 1.25 million New Zealand households and businesses can now access Ultra-Fast Fibre. 40% of them are already connected. And the uptake in connections keeps growing month on month.

According to the latest Quarterly Broadband Deployment document, there are now 506,075 users connected to Ultra-Fast Fibre which is delivering close to 1,000 Megabits/second. By the end of 2022, 87% of New Zealanders in 390 cities and towns will have access to fibre broadband.

 

Ms Curran also highlighted that the improved connectivity to rural areas is just as important as that in urban centres, with the upcoming plan for the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI2). It will deliver new or improved broadband to 70,000 additional rural households and businesses.
