Are you really getting super low prices and bargain savings when you head to your local supermarket for the weekly shop? We've done what we do best and compared NZ Supermarkets!

Are you really getting super low, half price, cheap weeks and bargain savings when you head to your local supermarket for the weekly shop? We’ve tried to break it down by comparing the leading NZ supermarket big dogs, Countdown, Pak’nSave and New World in Auckland.

What things do Kiwi’s look for when choosing where we shop for groceries?

  1. Convenience of store – how close it is to you
  2. Experience of the store – does it feel good to spend time there, is it easy to shop and walk around
  3. Price – how much do we spend and how much do we get

Price of goods is the main influencer for majority of consumers, with times harder and incomes not keeping up with the rise in household expenses, we are seeking out the specials. Let’s get thrifty NZ!

We know Pak’nSave continue to boast having the ‘lowest food prices’, often supported by $2 deal weeks and a snazzy stick man on our screens. With little difference in prices between Countdown and New World on standard items but the shopping experience can be more intimate.

We tend to get caught up in ‘special offers’ being promoted but do we notice that some of those special offers are another supermarkets standard price? How tricky! Take Vitasoy Coconut Milk, it was on special at Countdown for $3, usually $4.99 but at Pak’nSave that same product every day price is $3. When our eyes catch the ‘every day low’, ‘special’ or ‘card price’ we just buy. But how much are we really saving and what is so special about the ‘specials’?

We did a little undercover comparison, being NZ Compare means we like to do just that, compare!

We looked at the classic Kiwi household breakfast and who cost what.

What was helpful?

There was some good specials making the costs a few dollars cheaper than it would be. Pak’nSave came out true to form as the best value for money.

What wasn’t helpful?

That some of the supermarkets didn’t show the standard price of the item, which made it harder to budget in general. What if you could not spare a few more dollars, specials typically make it harder to rely on your budgeting skills meaning we needed to allow for slightly more money just incase, this defeats the purpose of budgeting.

Top tips:

  • Never go in 'hangry', you might come out with a plan to get full but would have spent more money than needed
  • All leading supermarket chains now offer click and collect options, so you can sit in the comfort of your home and compare the prices without getting caught up in the specials
  • If it’s on special, check until what date it is, don’t to get to the counter to find out it’s back to full price
  • Like with all household bills, it’s best to be prepared. Compare and see where you can save
