Knowing the different types of pet insurance can help you choose the right coverage for your furry friend!

Kiwis love their furry friends. Many of us consider our cats and dogs nothing short of family. It makes sense that more and more are choosing to protect their pets well-being by investing in pet insurance. Unlike humans, our pets don’t get to enjoy free healthcare. Not to mention, vet bills can add up and become exceptionally expensive. Investing in pet insurance means that your furry friend will be protected if something happens to them, and your wallet won’t have to face those high fees.

In honour of Pet Day, we wanted to break down the 3 different types of pet insurance coverage so that you can make the most informed decision about your furry friend’s care.

1. Accident Only

This is the most basic tier of pet insurance and therefore the most affordable. This insurance plan is for sudden, unforeseen events and covers your pet for accidental injury only. If you are happy to pay the bills for illness, but want coverage for accidents and a budget-friendly premium, this is a great option for you.

2. Accident and Illness

This insurance option covers both accidents and illnesses. It is designed to cover the large, typically unexpected vet bills and isn’t meant to be used for the everyday expenses of caring for your pet. If you are comfortable with paying for regular vet bills and check ups, but want coverage for accident and illness, this is a great one for you.

3. Accident, Illness and Minor Treatment

The most comprehensive pet insurance option that covers accidents and illnesses, and can be used for more minor vet bills. With a wider coverage, it can typically be claimed for a larger range of vet bills such as skin treatments and larger surgeries. This is a good option for those who want more certainty about what they’ll be paying for their pet’s healthcare in a year.

Find the best insurance policy for your furry friend by comparing.

Now that you know about the most typical different types of policies, it is important that you take the time to compare the different policies and providers. Not all policies are made equal. To make sure you are getting the best care possible for your pet, compare policies side-by-side so that you can make the most informed choice and find the best deal.
