Frank Energy Closing - What are your options?
Jun 10, 2025

Frank Energy is closing in September 2025.  If you don’t switch to a new retailer before this date you will automatically transfer your power to Genesis... it will cost more.

Frank Energy customer?  This is important. If you don't take action you WILL be paying more for your power*.

Frank Energy, the budget power brand owned and operated by Genesis Energy has today announced it will be closing, with Genesis streamlining its retail business into one brand.

Frank Energy was the cheeky, straight-talking energy brand launched by Genesis in 2022, but it is set to be absorbed back into its parent company as the NZ energy market continues to evolve.

The move marks the end of Frank as a standalone brand, with all services and customers transitioning to Genesis unless you compare and switch to a different provider.

Originally created to offer a simpler, more transparent alternative in a market often criticised for confusion and complexity, Frank Energy quickly gained traction. With competitive pricing, a focus on customer experience, and a personality that didn’t take itself too seriously, Frank won over thousands of Kiwis — and took home the Consumer NZ People’s Choice Award three years running.

But behind the scenes, New Zealand’s energy sector has been undergoing major change. Rising operating costs, shifting energy demands, and the growing need for future-ready infrastructure have forced energy retailers to reassess how they operate.

Both Frank Energy and Genesis Energy made the decision to pull out of listing on the Power Compare website a couple of years ago, preventing us from accurately comparing their prices and plans in our comparison platform.

Genesis has now made the strategic decision to consolidate its efforts under a single retail brand — itself.  The company says the change will allow it to increase investment in digital tools, streamline operations, and deliver a stronger, more consistent energy experience for all customers.  Here at Power Compare we think it will lead to higher prices for consumers who were Frank Energy customers, so it really pays to compare your bill and your power provider before you get moved to the Genesis Flexi Plan.

A spokesperson for Frank Energy said  “While it’s sad to say goodbye to a brand like Frank, this is really about bringing the best of both worlds together,” a spokesperson said. “Our ambition is to carry Frank’s attitude, simplicity, and customer-first thinking into everything we do at Genesis.”

For existing Frank Energy customers, the transition has been designed to be as seamless as possible, with no disruption to electricity supply, but you may well find your wallet disrupted.

Compare Prices - Frank Energy vs. Genesis Energy

As mentioned above, Frank Energy and Genesis Energy declined to work with NZ Compare some years back, as such we do not have full pricing data for their plans, we do however have expertise and knowledge, as well as data on Frank prices from some of their customers who have contacted us to compare prices.  We have outlined one such comparison below to highlight how Frank customers would be paying up to 11% more when their plans are migrated to the Genesis Flexi Plan.

Customer Comparison Example - Auckland Based, 2 bedroom home, using 299 kWh over 30 days.

The following example is a comparison based on how the bill of a current customer of Frank Energy in Auckland will INCREASE with the move to Genesis.

PROVIDERUNIT RATE (EXCL. GST)DAILY RATE (EXCL. GST)EST. MONTHLY BILL (EXCL. GST)
FRANK ENERGY25.50 C$1.20$112.25
GENESIS ENERGY FLEXI RATE29.55 C$1.20$124.38
DIFFERENCE PER MONTH
+ $12.13 WITH GENESIS ENERGY
DIFFERENCE PER YEAR+ $145.56 WITH GENESIS ENERGY

This equates to an 11% increase in the monthly cost of this user's energy bill for the same usage, which in real terms is $145.56 per year for this small house and low energy user.

Genesis does offer Power Shout hours (free power at times) and some discounts (up to 3%), which could reduce this effective cost if used wisely — but it’s not guaranteed to fully offset the higher base rates.

So, what does this mean for you if you are a Frank Energy customer?

Basically, this means if you do nothing, you will more than likely end up paying significantly more for your electricity come September when you are moved to the Genesis Flexi Plan.

So don't wait!  Switch your power provider today!  Power Compare has a number of great partners and great plans, with many offering welcome bonuses and discounts when you join.  There is no incentive to stay with Genesis when they move you over and there is no loyalty bonus for sticking with their parent company.  Compare plans and providers today.
