There’s no point choosing the cheapest plan, if it’s difficult to get customer support when you need it. Loyalty discounts: Although the Government last year instructed power providers to discontinue them – some of New Zealand’s biggest power retailers are still offering prompt payment discounts. Most providers now offer fairer loyalty discounts that is available to all customers, regardless of whether they pay their bill ‘promptly’. So, if you’re keen on them, it’s still possible to find power plans that offer good loyalty discounts.
Rewards: Compare the rewards offered on your power plan – this could be joining credit or gifts for new customers, discounts when you bundle your services like electricity, gas, broadband or phone, free off-peak hours. So, keep an eye on rewards to choose the ones that will have the biggest impact on your family.
Bundling options: We are seeing an increasing number of power providers offer great deals bundling your home utilities like power, gas, broadband or phone. This can allow you to get better savings than if you pay for each service separately, and gives you the convenience of dealing with just one provider for several services – easy!
Contract options: The contract is the length of the contract you will be locked-in for, if you want to cancel your contract early you usually have to pay a cancellation fee. Power contracts are typically open term (no contracts), 12 month, or 24 months. If you don’t want to commit for that amount of time, you can also choose a ‘no contract’ plan, which usually runs from month-to-month.
