How to make an informed choice about power

At Power Compare we believe that everyone should have the information they need to make an informed choice about their power plan.

We understand that finding the best power plan isn’t a one-size-fits all process of recommending the cheapest. We try to make it as easy as possible to compare power plans side-by-side to help you make an informed choice about the products and services that are best for you.

It can feel like there are a lot of factors to consider when comparing power plans. Whether you are looking for electricity, gas or solar power. We’ve outlined some of the top things to look for when comparing power plans. Use our comparison tool to see a custom list of power plans available at your address.

Here are top things to look for when comparing power plans

  1. Your best power plan will depend on your address
Enters your address into our finder to bring up a customised list of plans available in your area, including estimates of your bill.
  2. Choose the type of power that best suits your home
The best power plan for you will depend on how you power your home and whether you are looking for electricity, gas, solar or a combination.
  3. Ratings
Choosing a provider with a good track record can give you peace of mind when choosing a new power provider. There’s no point choosing the cheapest plan, if it’s difficult to get customer support when you need it. Our Power Compare rating takes into account overall satisfaction, value for money and customer service, so you can choose a provider offering the services that are important to you.
  4. Price per month
Comparing price can feel complicated when choosing power. Do you choose the plan with the best loyalty discounts, or one that offers joining rewards or off-peak rates? It can be useful to work out the cost you would pay per month for the full term of your contract to work out which deal offers the best value – which our comparison tool does for you!
  5. Think about the features that are important to you:
The main ones to consider are:

Loyalty discounts:  Although the Government last year instructed power providers to discontinue them – some of New Zealand’s biggest power retailers are still offering prompt payment discounts. Most providers now offer fairer loyalty discounts that is available to all customers, regardless of whether they pay their bill ‘promptly’. So, if you’re keen on them, it’s still possible to find power plans that offer good loyalty discounts.

Rewards: Compare the rewards offered on your power plan – this could be joining credit or gifts for new customers, discounts when you bundle your services like electricity, gas, broadband or phone, free off-peak hours. So, keep an eye on rewards to choose the ones that will have the biggest impact on your family.

Bundling options:  We are seeing an increasing number of power providers offer great deals bundling your home utilities like power, gas, broadband or phone. This can allow you to get better savings than if you pay for each service separately, and gives you the convenience of dealing with just one provider for several services – easy!

Contract options: The contract is the length of the contract you will be locked-in for, if you want to cancel your contract early you usually have to pay a cancellation fee. Power contracts are typically open term (no contracts), 12 month, or 24 months. If you don’t want to commit for that amount of time, you can also choose a ‘no contract’ plan, which usually runs from month-to-month.

You can view an estimated cost for your preferred contract length by by choosing to view price per 30 days, price per 6 months, price per 1 year or price per 2 years when comparing plans with Power Compare.
